No alarms. The sun did that job for us.
The first thing we saw was the water.
Nobody said "let's swim." We just were.
Still in yesterday's clothes when we jumped in.
The whole morning was ours.
Nobody remembered whose float was whose.
We migrated between waters.
Pool, spa, repeat. That was the whole itinerary.
The sun set on the same table.
We said "quick lunch." Feeding people you love is its own kind of rest.
Time moved slower out here.
A drink, a hat, nowhere to be.
We found the shade around two.
And stayed until the ice gave up.
Inside, just long enough to cool down.
Then the pool called again.
One more swim, we kept saying.
Nobody counted after the third.
The light does this every night.
We just never usually watch. It softened everything — the walls, the light, us.
Dinner cooked itself slow.
Smoke, citrus, someone humming.
The strings came on before we noticed the sun leave.
Lights on, volume down.
The water held the last of the heat.
We floated until the stars steadied.
We left the doors open.
Stars climbed over the wall. We stayed a little longer.
Nobody checked the time.
The fire did the talking.
